I Block Party brings locals and people out of town to Arcata

ARCATA, Ca (KIEM) – Locals and people from out of town get down to live music, eat food and have a couple of drinks at the I Block Party on this Labor Day. This family-friendly event is all about having fun and raising money for Arcata’s Sister City project in Camoapa Nicaragua.

Live music, beer, and food, they’re all one of the many things that made locals flock to the I Block Party in Arcata. Even a resident from Vallejo is excited to get in on the festivities.

“I really enjoy it. I like the fact that it’s a tight-knit community. Everybody knows everybody. I like how everything is basically homegrown. It’s really fun. We’re having fun. My dog likes it too,” said Alex Gogaj, Vallejo Resident.

All the proceeds from the community fundraiser will go to Arcata’s Sister City Project. Last year $13,000 was raised at the I Block Party.

“The Sister City is an organization that developed in 1986. [We developed] a friendship with the city of Camoapa, Nicaragua in order to cross those political boundaries to show friendship and solidarity,” said Katrina Suarez, the Coordinator for the I Block Party.

The food and good cause don’t stop there. The block party even has a kid’s section so children can play with their best friends.

“She’s my best friend,” said Alora Homen, 4-year-old Arcata Resident.

“I knew there was going to be a lot of my friends here. There’s going to be a lot of excitement. There’s really nothing to do at my house, so I just came here to have fun and enjoy the time,” said Woston Ciotti, 8-year-old Arcata resident.

Others just come out to the Labor Day block party to embrace their community.

“It’s just really awesome to be a part of the community. It’s a beautiful community, we can get involved in any way that we wish,” said Bobbi Bowman, an Arcata resident.
