Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — Children around the country are celebrating Read Across America Day, which also falls on Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

Story book characters come to life. That’s how students were welcomed to school at Washington Elementary for childhood author Dr. Seuss’s birthday, also known as Read Across America Day.

The day was full of fun books and activities, like Cat in the Hat, Fox in Socks, and Green Eggs and Ham. It’s all about encouraging kids to read more books and get them excited about reading.

Over at grant elementary school, students had a very special guest at reading time, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal. He read the book Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are. Not only was he there to read to the kids, but also teach them some valuable lessons about being thankful.

The Read Across America initiative was first launched back in 1997 and is celebrated in schools across the U.S.
