Yurok Tribe Chairman Discusses Covid-19 Response, Including Shelter in Place and Tribal Land Closure

Klamath, Ca. (KIEM) — While Humboldt County residents are sheltering in place, the Yurok Tribe has their own mandate in effect, and is doing everything possible to keep their community safe.

According to Tribal Chairman, Joseph L. James, Tribal Police do have a partnership and constant collaboration with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The tribe has taken additional steps to protect tribal members and the community.

After seeing an influx of travelers and visitors into the area during the pandemic, the tribal council made the decision to close all tribal lands to non-residents. This was all in an effort to do what’s best for the entire Yurok community.
