U.S. Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay Honors Four Crewmembers Lost at Sea

Eureka, Ca. (KIEM) — U.S. Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay took the time to honor four crewmembers lost at sea off the coast of Cape Mendocino.

The memorial was live streamed on the Coast Guard’s Facebook page Monday morning.

23 years ago on June 8th, 1997 four helicopter crew members were lost after they were deployed to rescue mariners in distress about 60 miles West of Cape Mendocino.

Crewing the Sector Humboldt Bay MH-65 Dolphin helicopter were Lieutenant Jeffrey f. Crane, Lieutenant J. G. Charles Thigpen the 4th, Petty Officer 3rd class Richard L. Hughes, and Petty Officer 3rd class James G. Caine.

Sector Humboldt Bay Commander, Captain Mark Hiigel, says not only is the crew being honored Monday, but every day.
