FORTUNA, Ca. (KIEM)-Fortuna motorists will have to find a new route to get in and out of the city for at least three months as the city is in the midst of replacing the culvert at Jameson Creek and Rohnerville Road.

Heavily traveled Rhonerville Road is completely shut down while under construction.

The closure is necessary to allow the city’s contractors adequate workspace to complete the more than $2M project funded through a grant.

Brendan Byrd is the City of Fortuna engineer.

“So what’s going to happen is the contractor is going to dig out this entire roadway to get down to that pipe grade so that a big new cast concrete box can be installed,” said Byrd. “To do that the whole there are going to have to dig is almost forty foot deep from the bottom of the road.”

According to Byrd, about four years ago the pipe underneath Rohnerville Road was damaged in a storm. As a result, it compromised the integrity of the embankment. Large boulders were used as a temporary solution, but now the City of Fortuna has deemed this project a priority.

Detour signage will be in place during that time.

“So to detour around the project site the primary routes of Rhonerville Road are Redwood Way, Kenwood Road, and School Street.”

Fortuna City Manager Merrit Perry says the new culvert is fish friendly.

“There are a number of projects to allow for fish to restore their original areas where they were blocked from,” said Perry. “Thing such as undersized culverts or other types of barriers to fish that migrate annually.”

Rhonerville road is the second busiest road in Fortuna. Construction will impact several thousand motorist daily.

The project is expected to be complete in early September.
