Early morning crash near Samoa Bridges leaves 2 people dead

SAMOA, Calif. (KIEM) — Emergency personnel respond to an early morning car crash near the Samoa Bridges that leaves two people dead.

The fatal crash happened this morning around 2:30, after California Highway Patrol received a call of a vehicle off the roadway and into the water on northbound State Route 255. A pedestrian in the area saw the car submerged in the water on the east side of the bridge and walked into Eureka to call 911.

According to CHP, the 2007 Chevy Malibu was traveling northbound on 255 south of the third span of the Samoa Bridges when it left the roadway for unknown reasons. Humboldt Bay Fire were called out and located the mid-size sedan upside down in the water about 25 feet from the shore.

Swimmers were able to access the area through thick brush, and pulled 2 unresponsive male victims from the vehicle and brought them to shore within 6 minutes of swimmers being deployed. The men were both transported to St. Joseph Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

The identities of both men are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
