Creek Fire in Covelo grows to 800 acres, 40% containment

COVELO, Calif. (KIEM) — The Creek Fire burning in Covelo has grown to 800 acres and is prompting evacuations warnings for area residents. Right now, Cal Fire says it is 40% contained.

The vegetation fire first broke out Tuesday afternoon near Highway 162 and Short Creek Road roughly 4 miles northeast of Covelo. Crews have been able to stop the forward progress of the fire.

An evacuation order for the areas of Short Creek, Hill Road, and Capistran Ranch have now been downgraded to an evacuation warning. So far, 2 structures have been destroyed with 8 more structures threatened. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported among residents or firefighters.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
