Human remains found in area of Snow Camp, Identity not yet confirmed

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-Human remains were found Friday in the area of Snow Camp Road, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Law officials were unable to confirm the remains to be that of Betty Baxter Simmons – but according to Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Samantha Kargas – it is possible.

At about 10:49 Friday morning, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a call from a Timber Company employee, regarding human remains located in the area of Snow Camp Road, near Korbel.

Humboldt County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and recovered the remains. The identity of the deceased has not been confirmed as of Saturday.

However, according to HCSO -foul play is not currently suspected, and no evidence of a crime has been located at this time.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office began their investigation on a missing person’s case, after a Berkeley woman’s car, was found abandoned in the same area the human remains were located Friday.

On September 24 around 8:30 p.m., a vehicle abandoned on Snow Camp Road with a note on the window, which read, tow to Berkeley was reported to police.

It was later discovered, the car belonged to 75-year-old Betty Baxter Simmons – she was last seen September 5, and has yet to return home.
