DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) – In Del Norte County, a steady stream of voters dropped off ballots and voted Tuesday.

Election staff are working hard to make sure every ballot is counted, including Del Norte’s County Clerk/Recorder of Del Norte Registrar of Voters Alissia Northrup.

“Just like everybody else in California, all voters in Del Norte County were mailed a ballot,” she said.

As of Monday night, Northrup says, a little more than 7,000 ballots have been received out of nearly 16,000 ballots sent out to Del Norte County residents, eligible to vote in the 2020 election.

“So were almost 50% back, on vote by mail,” she said.

As far as the turn out, it is as expected.

“It’s more than usual, but for a presidential we always tend to have a little higher turn out,” she said.

All eighteen Del Norte County polling locations remained open – those who weren’t able to get to the polls early – Northrup says that’s OK.

“As long as you are in line in the polling place by 8 p.m., you will be allowed to vote,” she said.

As far as voter fraud in Del Norte, Northrup says, they have safe guards in place and encourages anyone with questions, to simply ask.

“Every ballot that comes in is examined by a person,” she said. “That ballot is examined for a signature an address to make sure it hasn’t been tampered with.”

Once that ballot has been counted and given credit – it will be flagged as duplicate someone attempts to cast their ballot more than once.

“There’s a lot of safety nets and check and balances in place,” she said.

Northrup says, this is year’s election is different than any other year, it’s been challenging but she says they’re ready.
