Eureka Police Officer Camaron Hooks in stable condition, pursuit suspect in custody

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — New information on that high-speed police chase in Eureka that included a crash with injuries yesterday.

Eureka Police Officer Camaron Hooks is in stable condition after sustaining serious injuries while involved in that chase. The suspect, 35-year-old Michael Caleb Reed, a wanted felon out of Bakersfield, is now in custody.

It all started yesterday morning when eureka police were called out to the holiday inn for a reported assault. Reed took off with EPD beginning a pursuit southbound on Broadway.

At the intersection of Broadway and West Henderson Street, the 2nd EPD vehicle involved in the chase collided with an uninvolved driver. The woman was examined and treated for her injuries at St. Joseph Hospital.

Officer Hooks was flown to an out of county trauma hospital for further treatment. Chief Watson tells us Thursday morning, that Hooks is still awaiting surgery, but remains in stable condition.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office continued the pursuit, and took Reed into custody after his car was disabled by a spike strip on Highway 101 south of Scotia. Reed was booked for domestic violence, evading and resisting arrest, and other charges.

EPD will be conducting an administrative pursuit review in addition to the criminal case.
