EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-The Redwood Skywalk at the Sequoia Park Zoo is in its final phase of construction staff, it’s the longest – the highest in the world, and the best part, it’s ADA accessible.

The tour started at the entrance of the attraction.

“Right here is kind of the gathering- beginning of the experience of the Redwood Skywalk,” said Director of The Sequoia Park Zoo Gretchen Ziegler.

“All along the way, after you’ve gotten an idea what this experience is going to be and why we built it and why people want to come check it out, there’s going to be some really cool factoids panels going up to the launch deck,” she said.

According to Zielgler — the attraction’s ascent ramp is nearly the height of the tallest known living North Coast Redwood, at more than 380 feet, the attraction will be self-guided.

“We will be talking a lot about the importance of Redwoods they did for our community – what they continue to do for our community, it’s just all about this incredible setting and our beautiful Redwood Forest,” she said.

The Redwood Skywalk will feel like a virtual “Redwood Climb” – with no stairs – which makes the attraction ADA accessible with one exception – an optional 369-foot adventure leg.

“The ADA leg of the experience is much more rigid, the hand rail is higher much more, so there’s not much movement in those bridges – so you can kind of have that experience and you still get all the same views, ” said Site Project Manager Jess Kokkeler with Synergo

Kokkeler says, the attraction is an adventure for all age groups.

“It’s for adults alike to really enjoy and appreciate the forest and learn more about it, and the fact that they are doing interpretive stations, is going to be very good,” he said.

Ziegler says, a new exhibit is in the works.

“And over on this side of the launch deck, you are going to eventually see our bear and coyote exhibit and that’s in design,” she said. “We hope to start constructing that this spring or summer. “

The entrance to the Redwood new Redwood Skywalk experience will be included with the standard paid entry into the Sequoia Park Zoo.

“People are coming here for the Redwoods, they can kind of start here at the Sequoia Park Zoo, and get a real immersive experience,” said Ziegler. “I mean, nowhere else can you get this high, in a forest like this.”

When the Redwood Skywalk is expected to open is still unknown, but they did tell Redwood News a special announcement is coming in early 2021.
