Winners announced for local Christmas decoration contests

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-The winners of the mayor’s first annual ‘Home for the Holidays’ decoration contest were announced Wednesday.

The 3333 Harrison Avenue Christmas Town entry was declared the winner.

Their spooky Christmas theme earned 20% of total votes.  

The mayor encouraged Eureka residents to decorate area homes with their best holiday decor – a holiday map was released to showcase the entries – which made for a COVID-19 friendly activity.

City of Eureka’s 5th Ward Councilmember Kim Bergel says, the event brought the community together.

“It was an idea brought by our mayor, I think it was just and up to bring joy into the season this has been a really hard season for all of us, and to have a way to kind of collaborate in a way of beauty and joy,” she said. “It was such a great thing, it was safe, you could be in your vehicle [or] could walk, you know, social distance, six-feet, it was just a great event,” said Bergel.

McKinleyville’s Christmas light and door decorating contest winners were also announced.

For best decorated home, first place went to the McAtee family – second place was the Boswell family – 3rd place went to the Freitas family – and 4th place – the Walker family.

 The winner for best inflatables went to the Mikolai family – followed by the Miller family – 3rd place went to the Rodriguez family and in 4th place- the Watson family.

The three winners of the door decorating contest are as follows, the Sandige family were declared the winners – in 2nd place the Davis family and 3rd place went to the Cerruti family.

Prizes ranged from gift cards to cash.
