The Fortuna community garden is moving to a new location

FORTUNA, CALIF. (KIEM)- The Fortuna community garden is moving to a new location.

The community garden began nine years ago and has given the community an opportunity to use parts of the garden to grow their own produce.

The garden has also been able to provide food for the St. Joseph’s Catholic Food Pantry and the Seventh-day Adventist Community Service’s Food Pantry.

The garden is currently located behind the St. Joseph Rectory and Activity Center and will move to the space next to the Fortuna Junior Academy.

The committee in-charge of the garden says that the move will give them a chance to expand the garden to better serve the community.

“We’re just grateful for the land and the opportunity to keep something like this going because you know again with COVID happening and everything we’re learning that the national food system is very fragile, very insecure and that we, as a rural community, need to get back to some of our roots and learn how to sustain ourselves,” said Sean Todd, gardens coordinator for the Fortuna Adventist Community Services.

The garden started the move in late December and should be ready to be re-opened to the community sometime in April.
