EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-Two Good Samaritans were honored Monday from both, Humboldt Bay Fire and the Eureka Police Department for their quick actions that helped rescue a man whose truck plunged into Humboldt Bay, last month.

Willow creek resident Hiedi Johnston and YouTube star Patrick Mayo were strangers, on January 2nd 2021, what they experienced, will bond them for life.

“Hiedi screamed that something was going on and she wanted to get people’s attention,” said Mayo.

Witnesses say they saw a black pick-up truck barrel through the parking lot near the Wharfinger Building – hit a pole before plunging into the bay, within moments they say a woman with a pink sweater jumped in.

“There were probably a dozen people that witnessed that accident, but Hiedi was the first one in that water,” said Mayo.

Johnston says the miracle was the victim was calm and alert.

“And I pulled with everything I had, and he came out the window,” she said.

It was later determined the man had a medical emergency while behind the wheel.

“I wedged my in the hood by the windshield and was able to hang on to the antenna until Patrick arrived,” she said.

With his decommissioned Coast Guard Defender-Class boat, and helped everyone to safety.

“It was an honor to have saved that man’s life with you [Hiedi Johnston],” said Mayo.

“I just thought he can’t die that way,” she said.
