HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Governor Gavin Newsom announced earlier this month that Blue Shield health insurance is stepping in to help with the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines in California. Blue Shield will manage vaccination requests using state allocation guidelines and oversee the distribution of doses to counties, pharmacies, and healthcare providers.

The Humboldt County Public Health Department is planning larger mass vaccination sites, similar to the fixed sites that are already in place, in preparation for Blue Shield coming in as a 3rd party administrator. County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman says that should happen in March, but no word on the exact date.

“We feel that those can actually have just as much throughout as a drive through model, so potentially upwards of 1,000 or 1,200 people in a day through those sites,” Hoffman says.
