HUMBOLDT/DEL NORTE/MENDICINO, Calif. (KIEM)- The National Weather Service announced that residents of Humboldt, Del Norte and Mendocino counties should expect to hear a tsunami warning on Wednesday, March 24 between 11 a.m. to noon.

The purpose of this test is to make sure that all the warning systems work properly in the event of a real tsunami emergency.

“Here on the North Coast, we have a real tsunami threat. We have a large fault off our coast that can produce a large earthquake at any time and that can produce a tsunami that can get here in as little as 10 minutes,” said Ryan Aylward, Meteorologist for the National Weather Service. ”Then we have distance source threats. We have Alaska, Japan, Chile, different places where you can have large earthquakes that can produce tsunamis that come towards our coastline.”

The one thing that Alyward wants to reiterate is that the alarm is just a test. So, there is no reason to call 911.
