Local Covid-19 infections on the rise in children under the age of 19 according to health officials

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — As Humboldt County continues vaccinating the older population, more Covid-19 infections have been popping up in children.

Nationwide, cases in children have jumped from 2 to 3% to between 20 and 30% of reported cases in the last four to six weeks, according to local health officials. Locally, just shy of 20% of all cases have been reported in children under the age of 19.

Most cases in kids have been mild or asymptomatic, but with the UK variant circulating around the county kids are getting sicker and showing more symptoms. The first hospitalization in someone younger than 19 was reported earlier this week.

Kids under the age of 16 aren’t eligible for a vaccine just yet, but the federal government is working to open up vaccines to kids 12 to 15 years old in the coming weeks with younger kids expected to be approved late summer or early fall.

“Humboldt County Public Health and all the vaccine providers in the County will be ready to start vaccinating younger kids as soon as we have an authorization to do so from the federal and state governments because we feel this is the strongest way to protect our kids and our community,” according to Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman.
