EUREKA AREA SHIGELLA OUTBREAK

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) In an update on the bacterial infection outbreak that has been plaguing the Eureka Area, Humboldt County Health leaders are saying that a strain of Shigella continues to circulate in the community. They say Shigella is continuing to make people sick. 

Officials say there were at least four likely cases occurring over the past week. In all, a total of 31 confirmed or probable cases have happened in over a month. 

While health experts initially thought the outbreak was tied to a pair of local laundromats where infected individuals washed clothes. It has since spread throughout the Eureka 101 Corridor and beyond. 

 Health experts say washing your hands and practicing good hygiene is the best way to protect yourself from Shigella.
