Richard Evans was one of many community organizers who helped create the landmark we know as the Jefferson Community Center. He passed earlier this year from cancer and this weekend his legacy is being celebrated.

“Richard didn’t want a funeral,” said Zuretti Goosby, a close friend to Evans. “He wanted a celebration and he thought that the nicest way to combine that would be to do the celebration as a fundraiser for the Jefferson Community Project.”

Evans was on the board of the West Side Community Association which is the group that oversees the Jefferson School projects. Evans was an artist. An activist and a community organizer. One of his main priorities in life was the Jefferson Community Center where the benefit will be held.

“We should really point out, Heidi Benzonelli, who’s the director of the Jefferson Project, she’s been the spearhead behind this,” Goosby said. “and when he passed away earlier this year, his community of friends decided that a great way to recognize him would be to have an art fundraiser for him.”

The proceeds from Saturday’s art auction will go to the Jefferson Community Project. The event is tomorrow starting at 5 p.m.
