Eureka, Ca. (KIEM)-The Humboldt County Human Rights Commission is taking steps to address homelessness.

A new federal ruling aims to protect homeless from ordinances that punish them for being unable to find shelter. This stems from a unanimous decision to overturn a district court ruling, in a Boise, Idaho case where two homeless people challenged city ordinances, that wouldn’t allow them to stay overnight on public property.

At Thursday nights human rights commission meeting, those in attendance argued that if individuals have a criminal record for being homeless, it makes applying for residency even harder. As a result there is talk of a subcommittee being formed to find a space that can be dedicated to housing the low income population.
