Eureka Department of Public Works & Planning and Building Department Work to Combat Rising Sea Levels

HUMBOLDT COUNTY (KIEM) – Rising sea levels are a huge concern living here on the North Coast. Now officials are taking steps to help identity the problem.

Both the Eureka Department of Public Works and the Humboldt County Planning and Building Department are working to combat the issue. Public Works received a $425,000 grant which will be used to create a sea level rise adaptation plan for Eureka Slough.

Vulnerabilities are that have been identified include, 75% of the Humboldt Bay Shoreline is artificial, maintenance and overtopping.

An ad hoc committee has been formed consisting of Supervisors Fennell and Wilson. They will be meeting with other cities and agencies to find a solution to combat sea level rise.
