Governor Newsom Signs Statewide Rental Protection Legislation

Governor Gavin Newsom

SACRAMENTO, Ca. (KIEM) – California Governor Gavin Newsom signs state wide legislation to protect tenants and landlords from the economic impacts of Covid-19.

No tenants will be evicted before February 1st due to rent owed due to Covid-related hardship between March 4th and August 31.

Between September 1st and January 1st, tenants must pay at least 25% of the rent to avoid eviction.

Unpaid amounts will still be due to the landlord, who can begin to recover the debts in small claims court after March 1st of 2021.

Existing local ordinances are allowed to remain in place until they expire as long as they do not undermine the framework of the legislation.
