“So we heard shouting last night but I think that was after the fact,” she said.  “But yeah I saw ambulance, fire trucks, [and] all the police cars.”

Detective Sergeant Chris Ortega with the Arcata Police Department is leading the investigation.

“When the officers arrived, they located a 39-year-old resident with life threatening injuries,” he said.

Injuries he got from the suspect -now identified as 34-year-old Jacob Eli Steichen, who then barricaded himself into a backroom of the home.

According to Ortega, the victim and the suspect were siblings.

“So, officers initiated lifesaving efforts and had to extract the victim due to the suspect still being barricaded,” he said.

Community members helped officers with CPR until Arcata Mad River Ambulance first responders arrived.

The victim was taken to Mad River Community Hospital, where he later died.

The victim’s identification is not being released pending notification.

“The officers were able to negotiate the suspects surrender and he was taken into custody without further incident,” said Ortega.

Ortega says, this is an on-going investigation – anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Arcata Police Department’s Investigations Division.
