College of the Redwoods considers football program revival

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) – Football may return to Humboldt County as soon as 2022. College of the Redwoods is considering a potential revival of the program.

Due to budgetary issues resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, CR suspended the football program last spring. President Dr. Keith Flamer says the college is now examining the possibility of returning to football in the fall of 2022.

The institution hired a consultant to conduct an in-depth assessment of the feasibility. Bringing back the program will require modifications to the program. If revived, there will be a larger emphasis on grade point averages and graduation rates. The program will no longer recruit from outside of California, Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona to better partner with the community and service area.

Both Dr. Flamer and Athletics Director Bob Brown are hopeful for the future.
