Suspected DUI crash in Eureka leaves one person dead

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — One person is dead after a suspected DUI crash early Thursday morning in eureka. Just after midnight, California Highway Patrol were called out to a collision near Myrtle Avenue and Russell Lane where a car had collided with 2 parked vehicles.

The driver, Ismael Lopez Jr., and a female passenger who was unidentified were both taken to St. Joseph Hospital. The passenger died from her injuries a couple of hours later.

CHP says alcohol and drugs were a factor in the crash. Lopez was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence.
